Wilfred Ndidi Appointed New Captain of Super Eagles

Wilfred Ndidi has been named the new captain of Nigeria’s Super Eagles, stepping into a pivotal leadership role as the team prepares for upcoming international assignments, including the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

The appointment follows the recent retirements from international football of former captain Ahmed Musa and vice-captain William Troost-Ekong. Ndidi, the Leicester City midfielder, had previously deputised as stand-in captain on multiple occasions when the duo were unavailable.

With Musa now serving as general manager at Kano Pillars and Troost-Ekong playing club football with Al Kholood in Saudi Arabia, the Nigeria Football Federation has officially handed the armband to the 28-year-old, recognising his growing influence and experience within the squad.

Reflecting on the honour, Ndidi described the captaincy as a significant responsibility. “It’s a huge responsibility, and with the help of the players, everything will go smoothly,” he said.

Ahead of crucial fixtures, including the push for AFCON qualification, Ndidi emphasised unity and clear communication. “I have had conversations with the players, trying to make them understand the reason why we are here. We also need support from the staff and to have conversations about what’s ahead. It is very important that everyone is on the same page,” he added.

Ndidi also paid warm tribute to his immediate predecessor, William Troost-Ekong, whose leadership during Nigeria’s runner-up finish at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations remains fresh in memory. “He is a great leader, he speaks for the team, he stands for the team. I admire him a lot. How outspoken he is. He is one person everyone looks up to. He is an amazing guy. I have learnt a lot from him,” Ndidi said.

He revealed that the two had spoken recently, with Troost-Ekong continuing to offer guidance. “We spoke a couple of weeks ago; he still chipped in some advice. I feel he is still part of the team. He is going to be missed,” Ndidi noted.

The Super Eagles have undergone several transitional changes in recent months, with the retirements of long-serving players like Musa — Nigeria’s record appearance holder — and the dependable Troost-Ekong marking the end of an era. Ndidi’s elevation signals confidence in a younger generation to lead the team forward.

Known for his tenacity, tactical intelligence and consistent performances in the Premier League, Ndidi has earned over 60 caps since his debut in 2015. His appointment is seen as a natural progression, providing continuity while injecting fresh energy into the squad.
