The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has ordered for the immediate rehabilitation of public schools in the Kabusa community of Abuja after lamenting the dilapidated state of the structures.
Wike gave the directive after flagging off the rehabilitation project on the 9.8km Kabusa-Takushara Road on Tuesday.
He complained that if President Bola Tinubu sees the state of the schools, he would lose his job as a minister.
He also complained that the school structures are not fit for a place where children can come to acquire knowledge, hence the need for immediate rehabilitation to make it befitting.
In his words, “They said this is a school, is it not? Is it a school?
“My brother I no go lie, I will not accept this as a school for our people to have quality education and therefore, there will be immediate upgrading of this school to be what a school is supposed to be.
“I’m sure if Mr President comes here and sees that this is the school our children are learning [in], I will lose my job. And I don’t want to lose my job and therefore, this school we are going to make it to be happy to be what a proper school is supposed to be and under emergency, we must put the school back to what a school is supposed to be.”
He added that with how God has blessed the country, the citizens and children must not suffer. Wike asked Nigerians to pray for Tinubu’s administration in its efforts to make life better for Nigerians.
Not forgetting that Primary school teachers in the Federal Capital Territory, under the Nigeria Union of Teachers, just recently suspended their indefinite strike after 20 days in October, following an agreement with the FCT Administration to pay the remaining 60 per cent of the 25 months’ arrears owed to them.
Asides from the structures of the community school, the welfare of the teachers should also be considered.
