UPDATE: Police service commission calls for removal of IGP

The Joint Union of the Police Service Commission has called for the removal of the Inspector general of Police Kayode Egbetokun over alleged meddling in the recruitment process.

Fairview Africa had previously reported the recruitment of 10,000 constables into the Nigerian police force, a recruitment process which was handled by the Police Service Commission. However, the Nigerian police force had complained of being capable of handling the recruitment and was not involved in the recruitment process. The NPF eventually rejected the list of successful candidates.

During a press briefing on Wednesday in Abuja, the union also alleged that some top officers within the Nigerian Police Force, tried to smuggle names during the recruitment process. The aggrieved members of the union while singing protest songs, described the reactions of the NPF as diversionary tactics.

“We begin with this press conference, with a clarion call on the President and Commander in Chief of the Armed forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to immediately relieve the IGP, Kayode Egbetokun, of his appointment as IGP.

“Our concern comes from the fact that a public officer who misleads the president is causing confusion in the country and may lead to chaos, which is antithetical to his duty as a police officer,” its chairperson, Adoji Adoyi, said.

The PSC also disowned the trending press statement about the release of shortlisted recruits into the constable cadre of the police force.

“The Police Service Commission wishes to disown the trending press statement in social media on the release of the final shortlist of successful applicants for recruitment into the constable cadre of the Nigeria Police Force.”

“The Commission is aware that the Force Public Relations Officer, who was quoted to have signed the Press Statement on releasing the final list of successful applicants, has since disowned the statement.

Emphasising the press statement published by the security agency, the commission directs the police to investigate the source of the news as it has the power to.”

According to them, NPF intends to prevent the president from noticing the unpreparedness of the police training schools, to handle the training of the recruits, owing to the sorry states of the facilities.
