Umeadi dumps APGA, quits politics after 2023 presidential bid

Retired Anambra State Chief Judge, Justice Prof. Peter Umeadi, has resigned from the All Progressives Grand Alliance and withdrawn completely from partisan politics, two years after contesting the 2023 presidential election.

Umeadi, who served as APGA’s presidential candidate in the last general election, formally communicated his decision in a letter dated October 24, 2025, addressed to the party’s Ward 1 Chairman in Nri, Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The letter, personally signed by the former jurist and addressed to Mr Onyekwelu Jideobi, expressed gratitude to the party for providing him with a national platform during the elections.

“I respectfully write to resign from my membership of Nri Ward 1, All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA). By the same token, I withdraw from all partisan politics in Nigeria,” Umeadi stated in the correspondence titled “Resignation from Membership of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA)”.

He added: “I thank APGA for fielding me as its presidential candidate in the 2023 elections. The resignation of my membership from APGA and withdrawal from partisan politics in Nigeria take effect from today.”

The 70-year-old legal practitioner, who ran alongside his running mate on the Umeadi–Mohammed 2023 ticket, became the first jurist and academic of law to contest Nigeria’s presidency under a major political party.

Throughout his campaign, Umeadi advocated for the rule of law, separation of powers, and due process, describing these principles as “the true anchors of national renewal and fairness”.

His political journey with APGA began on March 20, 2019, when he joined the party at Nri Ward 1. He subsequently secured the party’s presidential ticket in June 2022.

Political analysts had widely regarded his candidacy as bringing intellectual rigour and ethical clarity to Nigeria’s political landscape, combining judicial integrity with academic depth.

Umeadi served as Anambra State’s Chief Judge from 2011 to 2019. In December 2022, months before the presidential poll, he argued that Nigeria’s political challenges could be resolved by electing a president from the South East region through the APGA platform.

The retired justice concluded his resignation letter with an assurance of his “warmest regards” to the party leadership.
