The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has pledged to disrupt telecommunications services across the country starting on March 1, 2025, unless telecom companies reverse their recent 50% tariff increase by February 29.
In a statement signed by NLC President Joe Ajaero and General Secretary Emma Ugboaja, the union condemned the tariff hike as exploitative, accusing telecom companies of breaching an agreement with the Federal Government and the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).
As part of their resistance, the NLC has called on workers and the public to boycott services from MTN, Airtel, and Glo between 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM, beginning Thursday, February 13, and continuing through the end of the month.
The union also urged citizens to stop purchasing data and instructed its state councils and affiliated unions to mobilize and raise awareness among Nigerians.
The NLC criticized the government for its failure to prevent corporate exploitation and warned against policies, such as the proposed Tax Reform Bills, which could further burden Nigerians financially.
