Senate introduces Bill to establish Local Government Electoral Commission

In a bid to ensure the full autonomy of the Local Governments in Nigeria as the third tier of government and finally free it from the hold of the state government, the Senate on Thursday passed its initial reading of proposed legislation to create a federal agency responsible for overseeing local government elections.

The Bill Titled Local Government Independent Electoral Commission (Establishment) Bill, 2024, is sponsored by Senator Musa Sani (Niger East) was introduced on the floor of the Red Chamber by the Leader of the Senate, Opeyemi Bamidele (APC, Ekiti Central).

There are questions and scepticism regarding it being a federal agency like INEC, will the yet to be created/named agency be under the control of the executive?
