The Social Democratic Party has expelled its former National Chairman, Shehu Gabam, alongside nine other party officials over allegations of misconduct, financial misappropriation, and abuse of office.
The party’s National Working Committee announced the decision on Thursday in Abuja after adopting recommendations from its Disciplinary Committee and a White Paper that examined allegations against the affected officers.
Addressing journalists at the party’s National Secretariat, the National Publicity Secretary, Rufus Aiyenigba, said the expulsion followed months of investigation and disciplinary proceedings.
“The move followed the adoption of the report of the Disciplinary Committee and a subsequent White Paper which reviewed the findings and recommendations on the allegations brought against the affected officers,” Aiyenigba said.
The NWC had earlier suspended Gabam, the National Youth Leader, Mr. Ogbonna Chukwuma Uchechukwu, and the National Auditor, Mr. Clarkson Nnadi, on 24th June 2025, after establishing a prima facie case of misconduct, financial impropriety, and gross abuse of office.
Aiyenigba explained that the party constituted an independent Disciplinary Committee on 4th July 2025, which conducted a two-week investigation and submitted its report on 18th July 2025.
He added that the NWC reviewed and adopted the White Paper on 15th August 2025, paving the way for Thursday’s decision.
Those affected by the expulsion include Alhaji Shehu Musa Gabam, the former National Chairman, and Mr. Ogbonna Chukwuma Uchechukwu, the former National Youth Leader. The National Auditor, Mr. Clarkson Nnadi, was relieved of his duties following his voluntary resignation.
Other expelled members are Adamu Abubakar Modibbo, Abubakar Dogara, Nuraddeen Bisalla, Solsuema Osaro, Ambo Ekpeyong, Eluwa Ifeanyi Henry, Humphrey Unwukaeze, and Judith Israel Shuaibu, who were accused of disloyalty and unlawful entry into the party’s national secretariat on 28th July 2025.
Aiyenigba disclosed that the expelled members were apprehended by security operatives whilst allegedly in possession of sensitive documents and valuables removed from the secretariat, and are currently facing criminal prosecution.
He said the disciplinary measures were necessary to “restore integrity, discipline, and internal order within the SDP”, adding that other administrative recommendations from the White Paper would be implemented to prevent future breaches.
“The actions take immediate effect from Thursday, 23rd October 2025,” Aiyenigba stated, noting that the decision was unanimously endorsed by all members of the National Working Committee.
Aiyenigba said the NWC reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, accountability, and constitutional order in the administration of the Social Democratic Party.
On 24th June 2025, the party’s leadership suspended Gabam and other officials over alleged financial misconduct, embezzlement, and diversion of party funds, leading to the disciplinary process that culminated in their expulsion.
