Russia issues statement distancing self from flag bearing protesters in Northern Nigeria.

While the #EndBadGovernance protest gained momentum on day 5 in the north, a most peculiar action among the protesters was the bearing and waving of the Russian flag during the procession. In northern states especially Kaduna and Kano, protesters were seen waving the Russian flag while chanting songs in Hausa. This action raised concern among authorities and the general citizens at large.

The Russian Embassy has however issued a statement on Monday distancing themselves from any involvement in the usage of the nation’s flag by protesters. They said neither the Russian government nor its officials are involved in the protesters’ activities.

“The Government of the Russian Federation, as well as any Russian officials, are not involved in these activities and do not coordinate them in any way.

“As always, we emphasise that Russia does not interfere in the domestic affairs of foreign states, including Nigeria.”

The embassy attributed the use of Russian symbols by the protesters to personal choices, tagging it as non-reflecting any official policy or position of the Russian government.

It also acknowledged Nigeria’s democratic processes, acknowledging peaceful demonstrations as a legitimate expression of democracy.

The embassy, however, condemned any potential disruptions or acts of violence that might arise from these events.

“These intentions of some protesters to wave Russian flags are personal choices of individuals, and they do not reflect any official position or policy of the Russian Government on the issue.

“We respect Nigerian democracy and believe that peaceful demonstrations in conformity with the Nigerian law are a manifestation of democracy.

“However, should these events lead to any disruptions or acts of violence, we strictly condemn them,” it added.

Videos surfaced online yesterday of several demonstrators in some northern states displaying the Russian flag.

Worried by such actions, the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, warned the perpetrators, tagging it as a treasonable offence.

The Department of State Services (DSS) equally said it has arrested the tailor involved in the mass production of the flags and some sponsors.

The #EndBadGovernance protests started nationwide last Thursday in response to the hardship in the country.
