Rivers Assembly Moves to Impeach Governor Fubara, Deputy

In a dramatic escalation of the state’s political crisis, the Rivers State House of Assembly on Thursday commenced impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his Deputy, Ngozi Oduh.

The action was taken during a plenary session presided over by the Speaker, Martins Amaewhule. The Majority Leader, Major Jack, read a notice of allegations citing gross misconduct and constitutional breaches against Governor Fubara.

A separate notice against Deputy Governor Oduh was read by the Deputy Majority Leader, Linda Stewart.

A total of 26 lawmakers signed the impeachment notice against the governor, asserting that his actions violate provisions of the Nigerian Constitution.

Speaker Amaewhule announced that the notice would be formally served on Governor Fubara within the next seven days, initiating a constitutionally mandated response period.

This development marks a significant downturn in the protracted power struggle between the state legislature and the executive branch, threatening fresh instability in Nigeria’s oil rich state.
