Reps Order for Arrest of Chairman of Tricycle Association, Warns Employers of Illtreating Staff

The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has been ordered by the House of Representatives Committee on Public Petitions to arrest Shamsudeen Adebayo Apelegun, the National Chairman of the Tricycle Association of Nigeria.

The call for his arrest is for his neglecting to appear before the committee to respond to allegations of official abuse and financial misappropriation.

Apelegun was repeatedly summoned to the committee more than five times, but he never showed up, therefore the arrest warrant was issued.

Egbetokun was instructed on Thursday by the committee members in a unanimous decision to capture and bring Apelegun to the next meeting on December 3.

The summons came after a petition accusing Apelegun of financial impropriety was submitted by the law firm I.M. Iliyasu and Co. on behalf of resentful association members.

Chairman of the committee, Mike Etaba, said, “We are here to ensure Nigerians’ welfare and will not tolerate any form of lawlessness. The Inspector General of Police is hereby requested to bring Apelegun in person during the next hearing.”

The management of Prima Factory, which is situated on Badagry Road in Lagos, was also warned with similar action by the committee in a related matter because they ignored claims that they neglected Rafiu Taiwo, an employee who was hurt at work.

After suffering an injury at work, Taiwo was reportedly abandoned by the firm and has not yet received proper care or payment.

The committee warned that all businesses doing business in Nigeria must treat their employees with dignity and accountability.

The Chinese-owned company, Prima Factory, which makes plastic preforms and caps, was warned to reply to the committee’s call or risk penalties.
