President Bola Tinubu has directly intervened in the rapidly escalating political feud in Rivers State, summoning the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, to an emergency meeting abroad, authoritative presidency sources confirmed on Saturday.
The urgent intervention follows the dramatic initiation of impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara by the state’s House of Assembly on Thursday, a move seen as reigniting a protracted power struggle in the oil-rich Niger Delta state.According to a report, the meeting between the President and the minister is scheduled to take place in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
President Tinubu is expected to travel to the emirate following a brief visit to France.“The President must see the danger in what Wike is doing,” the source stated. “I am aware he has summoned him to a meeting in Dubai. Barring any last-minute change, they are expected to meet abroad. Wike cannot impeach Fubara; the President will call him to order.”The source framed Wike’s recent political maneuvers as “an affront to the President” and warned of grave consequences.
The actions, the source argued, risked provoking widespread unrest in the Niger Delta region, with severe implications for the nation’s economy.“If you say you want to sack the first Ijaw man to be governor, are you not sending the Ijaw people back to the creeks? That will have attendant effects on the economy, and the President will not allow that to happen,” the source warned. The crisis reached a new peak when 27 members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, identified as loyalists of the FCT Minister, commenced fresh impeachment proceedings against Governor Fubara and his deputy, Professor Ngozi Odu.
During a plenary session presided over by Speaker Martins Amaewhule, the Majority Leader, Major Jack, read an impeachment notice detailing seven allegations of gross misconduct against the governor.
This development marks a significant intensification of the longstanding rift between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, which has plunged the state into a prolonged political stalemate.
As of the time of this report, there has been no official statement from the Presidency, the FCT Minister’s office, or the Rivers State Government regarding the scheduled Dubai meeting.
