President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Shamsedeen Ogunjimi as the new Accountant General of the Federation, following a thorough and competitive selection process. The announcement, made by Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information & Strategy, confirmed that Ogunjimi’s appointment will take effect on March 7, 2025, the same day the current Accountant General, Oluwatoyin Madehin, will retire.
Ogunjimi, 57, was initially named as Madehin’s successor in December 2024. A selection committee, which included Directors of Accounts in the Federal Civil Service, evaluated candidates through a rigorous, merit-based process. The selection involved three stages: a written assessment, an ICT proficiency test, and oral interviews, ensuring a transparent and highly competitive process.
The President’s decision highlights his commitment to promoting excellence, transparency, and competence in public service positions. Ogunjimi, a graduate of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, holds a Bachelor of Science in Accountancy and a Master’s in Accounting and Finance from the University of Lagos. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria and the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria.
In a statement, President Tinubu congratulated Ogunjimi on his appointment, urging him to approach his new role with integrity, professionalism, and a strong commitment to serving the nation.
This appointment marks a significant step in ensuring the continued effectiveness and credibility of the nation’s financial management system.
