The Chief Corporate Communications Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Femi Soneye, has confirmed that the Port Harcourt Petroleum Refinery in Rivers State has resumed operations. This marks a significant milestone in Nigeria’s oil and gas industry, with the refinery now processing 60,000 barrels of crude oil per day, or 60% of its capacity.
The refinery, which has a total capacity of 250,000 barrels per day, is expected to greatly enhance Nigeria’s refining capacity and reduce the nation’s dependence on imported petroleum products.
Despite multiple earlier promises of operational start dates in March, August, and September 2024, which were not met, the refinery’s reopening is a positive development for Nigeria’s economy. It comes at a time when the country has been facing challenges related to fuel scarcity and heavy reliance on imported petroleum products.
