POLICE FIRE TEARGAS AT PROTESTERS IN NIGERIA’S CAPITAL ABUJA ON INDEPENDENCE DAY

Police officers of the Nigerian Police Force (NPF) have fired tear gas at protesters who joined the #FearlessInOctober protests against bad governance in Abuja on Tuesday morning.

Protesters were gathered at the Utako Market area of Abuja on Tuesday when the police used tear gas to disperse them.

The protest is organised by some civil society organisations (CSOs) under the aegis of the #EndBadGovernance movement.

Some Nigerians took to the streets of Lagos and Abuja for the start of the #FearlessInOctober protests, which coincided with Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day, a follow-up to the nationwide #EndBadGovernance protest of August, which turned violent in certain northern states.

The protest aims to address grievances arising from the hike in fuel price, hike in electricity tariff, rising food costs, and the impact of inflation on the livelihoods of Nigerians.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu pleaded for more patience and time, saying his administration is retooling its economic policies for the good of common Nigerians during the nation’s 64th Independence Day Anniversary Broadcast on Tuesday morning.
