POLICE CONDEMN SHITE ATTACK IN ABUJA, CONFIRMS DEATH OF 2 OFFICERS

The Commissioner of Police, FCT division, Benneth C. Igwe has condemned the attack by the Islamic Movement in Nigeria popularly known as Shi’a which happened on Sunday in the Wuse Market area of Abuja and led to the death of 2 police men with several being injured.The unfortunate incident happened in the afternoon when the Shiites group in their large number engaged in what was described as a mourning walk. There is no clear information as to what led to the scuffle between the security agencies and the group. The incident however caused panic and disrupted businesses in the area. A spokesperson for the FCT Police Command, Josephine Adeh while confirming the incident, described the attack as unprovoked, accusing the group of destroying three police patrol vehicles.“The FCT police command wishes to confirm an unprovoked attack by the proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria, popularly known as the ‘Shi’ite’ group, on some personnel of the Nigeria Police Force attached to FCT command at Wuse Junction by the traffic light, where two (2) police personnel were killed, three left unconscious in the hospital, and three (3) Police patrol vehicles set ablaze,” she said.“The proscribed organisation attacked the police checkpoint unprovoked, wielding machetes, improvised explosive devices (locally made bombs in bottles with kerosene), and knives,” the statement added.The CP of the FCT division has confirmed the arrests of some perpetrators and promised to bring those involved to book.The Shi’ite group are famous for their processional walks which disrupts traffic and hinders movement.
