Peter Obi Declares 2027 Presidential Bid, Ties Local Election to National Ambition

Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has publicly signaled his intention to run for Nigeria’s presidency again in 2027, using a campaign rally ahead of Saturday’s local council elections to frame the vote as a key stepping stone.

Speaking to supporters in the Federal Capital Territory, Obi tied the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) election directly to his national ambitions. He urged the crowd to support the African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate, the party he recently joined.

“This coming election, support us in AMAC; it will help me,” Obi stated. “Your support in AMAC is critical to our journey. I am involved and contesting the coming election as number one. When I come back, you will see. I assure you.”

The comments mark Obi’s clearest declaration yet of plans for a second presidential run, building on his competitive 2023 bid under the Labour Party.

Obi’s switch to the ADC has energized his “Obidient” grassroots movement, with supporters pressing party leaders to adopt him as the 2027 flagbearer.

The party, however, is tempering expectations. ADC National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi urged supporters to avoid divisive rhetoric and prioritize unity.

“We understand the enthusiasm, but we must prioritize party cohesion and a united front above all else,” Abdullahi said in a recent statement.

Analysts are watching closely as Obi’s ADC alliance takes shape, with local elections offering a platform to build momentum for the 2027 national race.
