Internal divisions within the Peoples Democratic Party have intensified as the faction aligned with FCT Minister Nyesom Wike announced plans to reorganize troubled state chapters and conduct fresh congresses leading to a national convention.
Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, chairman of the factional Board of Trustees, unveiled the restructuring initiative during a meeting held at Wike’s official residence in Life Camp, Abuja on Saturday. The gathering brought together prominent party members including factional National Secretary Senator Samuel Anyanwu, former Abia State Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, former Kogi State Deputy Governor Dr. Philip Salary, and several other chieftains.
Ohuabunwa stated that the faction has already begun reorganizing affected states through the constitution of caretaker committees, describing the move as essential preparation for transparent congresses and a subsequent national convention. He emphasized that these reforms were necessary to rebuild trust, strengthen internal structures, and maintain the PDP’s standing as a model of fairness and inclusiveness in Nigeria’s democratic landscape.
The factional BoT chairman declared full support for the Abdulrahman Mohammed-led National Working Committee, pledging to work collaboratively to ensure proper adherence to party laws and guidelines. He stressed that the Board of Trustees must reclaim its constitutional role in stabilizing the party, providing wisdom, moral guidance, and steering the organization away from divisive tendencies.
According to Ohuabunwa, the BoT serves as the conscience and moral compass of the PDP, tasked with safeguarding the party’s soul and reinforcing the values that have historically distinguished it as a disciplined, democratically established institution. He warned that the board must uphold legality and due process in all its actions.
The senator urged faction members to prioritize unity while implementing the restructuring agenda, calling on them to rise above sentiments and act with collective purpose during what he described as a defining moment for the party. He expressed confidence that the PDP would emerge stronger, more cohesive, and better prepared for leadership responsibilities following the reforms.
Ohuabunwa emphasized the importance of strict compliance with federal laws, party regulations, and guidelines established by the Independent National Electoral Commission. He maintained that the faction’s commitment to rebuilding the PDP from within would restore public confidence in its internal processes.
The meeting proceeded despite short notice and travel delays, with Ohuabunwa thanking attendees for their commitment. He expressed optimism that the gathering would establish the foundation for a stable and reinvigorated PDP moving forward.
The restructuring initiative comes amid ongoing tensions within the PDP, with competing factions vying for control of party structures and direction. The Wike-aligned group’s plan to install caretaker committees and conduct fresh congresses represents a significant escalation in the internal power struggle that has plagued Nigeria’s main opposition party.
The faction’s emphasis on constitutional compliance and democratic processes suggests an attempt to legitimize its reorganization efforts within the party’s legal framework. However, the initiative is likely to face resistance from rival factions within the PDP, potentially deepening existing divisions.
