Osinbajo Hails Clean Cooking as Key to Africa’s Clean Energy Future

Former Vice President of Nigeria, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, has highlighted clean cooking solutions as a driving force for equitable and sustainable development across Africa. His statement was released to mark the International Day of Clean Energy.

Osinbajo emphasized that the day underscores the need for global energy access to be “safe, sustainable, and equitable for every community.”

He outlined the benefits of clean cooking, noting its role in reducing household air pollution, easing the dangerous and time-consuming task of firewood collection largely borne by women and girls cutting carbon emissions, and promoting healthier, more resilient communities.

“When homes have clean air, children grow stronger,” Osinbajo said. “When women gain back their time, they step into education, enterprise, and leadership.”

He stressed that community-level adoption of clean energy is essential for Africa’s progress. “When communities embrace clean energy, the continent advances toward true climate-positive growth,” he added.

While acknowledging progress made, Osinbajo called for sustained investment and strong policy support, framing clean cooking as a pivotal catalyst in Africa’s energy transition.

“Africa’s clean energy future is within reach, and clean cooking remains a powerful catalyst,” he concluded.
