Rapper Olamide has stirred fresh debate across the music world after describing Wizkid as the greatest Afrobeats artiste of this generation, ranking him directly after the late Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.
The YBNL boss made the remark while speaking at York University, Toronto, where he addressed students on Afrobeats, creativity and global music trends. He highlighted Wizkid’s consistency and global influence, noting their longstanding partnership in the industry.
Olamide said: “I’ve had the privilege of working with Wizkid, we’ve made so many songs together. You know say after Fela, Wizkid is the greatest Afrobeats artist ever.”
He also referenced their collaborations dating back to 2011, including tracks like “Street OT” and “Kana”, which became street favourites and helped strengthen the bond between both artistes.
The comment sparked loud cheers from the audience and quickly trended online. Within hours, social media platforms were flooded with reactions as fans revisited long-running arguments about who currently leads the Afrobeats movement.
Supporters of Wizkid applauded Olamide’s view, describing it as an honest recognition of the Starboy’s global achievements. Others pushed back, insisting that the title should go to other heavyweights such as Burna Boy or Davido.
