Observers Applaud INEC for Smooth, Credible Anambra Governorship Poll

International and local observers have praised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for what they described as a transparent and well-coordinated process in Saturday’s Anambra governorship election.

In a statement released by the Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, Mr Dayo Oketola, reports from the INEC Situation Room indicated that the election had been largely peaceful, with improved voter turnout compared to the 2021 exercise.

Observers said the conduct of the poll reflected a significant improvement in logistics, early deployment of materials, and effective use of technology under the leadership of INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, SAN.

Ambassador Dr Emmanuel Nkweke of the International Association of World Peace Advocates, who monitored polling units in Awka, described the process as “peaceful and well-managed,” commending INEC’s preparedness.

“Accreditation has been smooth, BVAS is working perfectly, and the officials are doing their jobs professionally,” Nkweke said.
“The environment is calm and secure. We saw up to seven police officers in some units, and their conduct has been exemplary. The collaboration among the security agencies deserves commendation.”

He added that his team had not witnessed any form of vote buying in the areas observed.

“As international observers, we report what we see, not rumours. So far, this election has been peaceful and credible,” he noted.

Civil society organisations also commended INEC’s early deployment of personnel and materials.
Ms Cynthia Mbamalu, Director of Programmes at Yiaga Africa, said her organisation’s monitors confirmed prompt arrival of officials and election materials across several polling units.

“Our observers were on the field before 7:30 am and confirmed that materials and INEC staff arrived on time. Voting started by 8:30 am as stipulated by the Electoral Act, showing a high level of readiness,” she stated.

Aguata Federal Constituency representative, Mr Dominic Okafor, also expressed satisfaction after casting his vote at Umuechefu Hall, Igboukwu.

“I must commend the INEC Chairman and his team. The process is seamless and the BVAS is functioning well. Voters are calm and cooperative, and turnout has been encouraging,” he said.

Chairman of Orumba South Local Government, Mr Shedrack Azubuike, echoed similar sentiments, describing the exercise as “peaceful and well-organised.”

INEC Chairman, Professor Amupitan, reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to conducting credible elections across the country.

“Our duty is to the Nigerian people. Every valid vote must count. We remain committed to transparency, credibility, and peaceful elections,” he stated.

So far, reports from across the state point to an orderly process, raising optimism about a credible outcome as vote collation continues in different local government areas.
