The National Police Council has confirmed Olatunji Disu as the substantive Inspector-General of Police. His name will now be forwarded to the Senate for screening and confirmation.
This development follows his initial appointment as acting IGP by President Bola Tinubu on February 25th after the resignation of former IGP Kayode Egbetokun.
Announcing the appointment at the time, presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga stated that President Tinubu would convene a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council to formally consider Disu’s confirmation. Following the council’s approval, the next step is transmission of his name to the Senate.
Disu officially assumed office as acting IGP last Wednesday during a brief ceremony at the Louis Edet House in Abuja, shortly after being decorated by President Tinubu.
Until his elevation, the 59-year-old Disu served as Assistant Inspector-General in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex, Alagbon, Lagos. He was promoted to the rank of AIG last year.
His previous postings include Commissioner of Police in Rivers State, after which former IGP Egbetokun deployed him to the Federal Capital Territory as Commissioner of Police.A member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, Disu has a history with the Force Intelligence Bureau, having previously headed the Intelligence Response Team (IRT), a role once held by Abba Kyari.Born on April 13, 1966, in Lagos Island, Disu enlisted in the Nigeria Police Force on May 18, 1992.
