In a significant breakthrough for security forces, troops have arrested a high-profile bandit leader, Fidelis Gayama, who has been linked to a spate of kidnappings, armed robberies, and terror attacks along the volatile Benue-Taraba border.
The operation was carried out by troops of the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Wukari, serving under the 6 Brigade of the Nigerian Army and Sector 3 of Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS). Acting on credible intelligence, the forces conducted a precision raid on December 21, 2025, in the Vaase community of Ukum Local Government Area, Benue State, leading to Gayama’s capture.
According to Lieutenant Umar Muhammad, the acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations for the 6 Brigade, Gayama had long been on the watchlist of multiple security agencies. Described as a “high-value target,” he is believed to lead a criminal network responsible for terrorizing travellers and communities along the Kente-Wukari Road and surrounding border regions.
“Further validation by personnel of the Nigeria Police Force at the Vaase Outpost confirmed that the suspect is among individuals declared wanted by the Beji Police Division, Ukum LGA,” Lieutenant Muhammad added.
Preliminary investigations reveal that Gayama is closely associated with Aka Dogo, another notorious and wanted armed group leader, indicating coordinated criminal activities across the border area. His arrest is expected to provide crucial intelligence for dismantling the broader network.
The Commander of 6 Brigade and Sector 3 OPWS,Brigadier General Kingsley Uwa, commended the troops for their professionalism and described the arrest as a major setback for criminal elements in the region.
“This arrest represents a significant blow to criminal networks operating within our area of responsibility. We remain committed to sustaining offensive operations to ensure the safety of lives and property,” Brigadier General Uwa stated.
He also urged residents to continue supporting security agencies with timely and credible information to enhance the effectiveness of ongoing operations.
Fidelis Gayama is currently in military custody and will be handed over to the appropriate law enforcement authorities for a comprehensive investigation and prosecution in accordance with Nigerian law.
