Nigeria defeats Benin Republic in AFCON qualifiers

The Super Eagles of Nigeria secured a comfortable win over Cheetahs of Benin in their opening match of the 2025 African Cup of Nation Qualifiers in Uyo.
Ademola Lookman with a “Man of the Match” performance scored a brace and Victor Osimhen came from the bench to score to ensure Nigeria sits at the top of Group D.
Nigeria had not won a match in seven qualifying matches prior to this one. They failed to impress and and charge up the near capacity crowd until the tail end of the first half when Ballon d’Or nominee, Ademola Lookman single-handedly beat three defenders on the trot and slot the ball into the net beyond the reach of Benin’s goal keeper.
Victor Boniface wasted couple of chances and Nigerian Goal keeper, Nwabali made couple of glorious saves.
Nigeria will now switch their attention to the upcoming qualifiers match against Rwanda in Kigali on Tuesday September 10.
