Nigeria, China Pledge Deeper Cooperation in Digital Economy, Renewable Energy

Nigeria and China have reaffirmed their commitment to expanding bilateral cooperation into new frontiers, including renewable energy and the digital economy, as both nations celebrate 55 years of diplomatic relations.

At a reception in Lagos marking the Chinese New Year and the anniversary of diplomatic ties, officials from both countries described the longstanding partnership as one that has evolved into a strategic relationship delivering measurable outcomes in infrastructure, trade, and economic development.

Chairman of the House Committee on Nigeria China Relations, Hon. Jaafaru Yakubu, said the bilateral framework established in 1971 rests on principles of mutual respect, non-interference, and shared development objectives. He noted that China remains one of Nigeria’s most vital partners in infrastructure, technology transfer, industrialisation, and education.“Visible outcomes of this cooperation include major rail, road, and power projects, alongside growth in manufacturing and digital innovation,” Yakubu said.

He identified renewable energy, healthcare, science and technology, agriculture, and human capital development as priority areas for expanded collaboration, adding that such partnerships would strengthen South-South cooperation and contribute to global development.Yakubu assured that the National Assembly would continue to promote investment-friendly policies aimed at job creation and long-term economic transformation.

Chinese Consul General in Lagos, Ms Yan Yuqing, highlighted several milestones achieved in 2025, including increased high-level diplomatic engagements and growing Chinese investment in Nigeria. She noted Nigeria’s participation in major Chinese trade fairs and the expansion of Chinese enterprises into new sectors across the country.Yuqing cited the Abuja Greater Water Supply Project now providing potable water to an estimated three million people and increased activity at the Lekki Deep Sea Port as flagship outcomes of bilateral cooperation. She added that the Lagos–Ibadan Railway and Lagos Light Rail recorded historic highs in passenger and freight movement.

She reaffirmed China’s commitment to high-level opening-up and to sharing development opportunities with Nigeria and Africa.
