The Niger State Government has directed residents of hamlets surrounding Kainji Lake to vacate the area within two months for resettlement by the Borgu Emirate Council.Governor Muhammad Bago announced the directive on Wednesday during a condolence visit to the Emir of Borgu, Alhaji Muhammad-Haliru Dantoro (Kitoro IV), in New Bussa.
The visit followed a recent terrorist attack in the Emirate that resulted in numerous casualties.Governor Bago stated that the relocation is necessary to prevent civilian casualties as the state and federal governments prepare to clear the adjoining forests of criminal elements.
He explained that these criminals have used Kainji Lake as a base, rendering the surrounding areas unsafe.
The Governor also expressed concern over the unprofiled influx of people into the Emirate, which poses a security risk and complicates efforts against informants who have undermined security operations.
He urged the Emirate Council to collaborate closely with security agencies and all levels of government to address insecurity. In response, the Emir pledged to work with authorities to identify and prosecute informants, emphasizing that security remains a top priority.
He thanked the Governor for the visit and assured him of the Emirate’s continued support for policies aimed at improving public welfare.
The Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Dr. Aliyu Abdullahi, who was also present, affirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to nationwide peace and security. He endorsed the relocation plan as a necessary step to reclaim the forest for community use.
