The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has referred the lawyers involved in the prosecution of minors arrested during the #EndBadGovernance protests to the relevant authorities for disciplinary action.
Dr. Anthony Ojukwu, Executive Secretary of the NHRC, made the announcement at the 2024 International Human Rights Day event in Abuja on Tuesday, stating, “We believe disciplinary action is being taken against them.”
Ojukwu also shared that the commission receives over two million complaints annually, highlighting the growing awareness of human rights among Nigerians.
He pointed out that, following the post-#EndSARS protests in Lagos, the NHRC investigated rights violations, leading to over N500 million in compensation for victims and disciplinary action against the implicated police officers.
“Those who violate human rights will face consequences. Nigerians should keep fighting for their rights and can reach out to us through our toll-free hotline,” Ojukwu emphasized.
Meanwhile, Mohammed Fall, the United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, remarked on the global rise in conflict, anger, and suffering, which has contributed to an increase in human rights violations. He reassured that the UN would continue to take corrective action based on the principles adopted by its member states.
