NAFDAC Reassures Public on Safety of Nestlé Infant Formula in Nigeria

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has addressed public concerns following a global recall of certain SMA Infant Formula batches by Nestlé UK in over 50 countries.

In a statement issued by the Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Christianah Adeyeye, the Agency confirmed that no Nestle infant formulae currently approved for sale in Nigeria are affected by the recall.

The recall in other countries is a precautionary measure due to the possible presence of cereulide a heat-resistant toxin from Bacillus cereus that can cause nausea and vomiting in specific UK batches.

NAFDAC has verified that the SMA and NAN infant formula products manufactured for the Nigerian market are not from the affected batches. This alert is issued to keep the public informed in line with the Agency’s commitment to transparency and food safety vigilance.

While the risk of exposure within Nigeria remains minimal, NAFDAC advises caution regarding unauthorized importation, online purchases, or personal carriage of infant formula during international travel.
