Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State has formally resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), marking a significant political realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a letter dated December 29, 2025, and addressed to the PDP Ward Chairman of Ampang West Ward in Mangu Local Government Area, Governor Mutfwang announced his resignation with immediate effect. The letter, acknowledged by the ward leadership a day later, expressed his appreciation to the party for providing him a platform to engage in Nigeria’s democratic process.
The governor’s letter read: “I write to formally notify you of my resignation from the PDP with immediate effect. I sincerely appreciate the PDP for providing me the political platform to participate in the democratic process.
“I acknowledge the support of party leaders, members, and supporters at all levels during my time in the party, and I remain grateful for the trust reposed in me.
“Given the realities of the moment and guided by my commitment to purposeful leadership, clarity of direction, and service delivery, I am compelled to seek an alternative political platform.
“Please, accept the assurances of my highest regards.”
The resignation is widely seen as a prelude to Governor Mutfwang’s planned defection to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). This move was publicly signaled by the APC National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, during a recent event at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
Political analysts view Governor Mutfwang’s anticipated move to the APC as part of a broader trend of opposition governors crossing over to the ruling party, which could significantly alter the political landscape in the North-Central region and strengthen the APC’s position nationally.
The governor’s office has yet to issue an official statement regarding his next steps, but party sources confirm that formal reception into the APC is being arranged for the coming days.
