LAGOS GOVT ORDERS CHARITY ORGANISERS TO SEEK CLEARANCE BEFORE PROCEEDING WITH ACTIVITIES IN STATE

The Lagos State Government has mandated all persons and groups intending to distribute gifts to vulnerable residents of the state during the yuletide season to seek clearance and assistance with the government before proceeding with their acts to avoid unfortunate situations.

This requirement arises as a result of stampede which has resulted in deaths in Ibadan, Anambra and the FCT.

In a statement on Monday, Omotoso stated that Lagos State Safety Commission would issue clearance if the organizers meet the requirements set by the government.

It read, “The Lagos State Government has observed with serious concern the stampede during philanthropic gestures of individuals and organizations in some parts of the country.

“Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu sympathizes with families whose loved ones were involved in the stampede that led to loss of lives in some states.

“To prevent such occurrences in Lagos State, all individuals or groups that intend to distribute items to large gatherings of people are advised to seek clearance from the Lagos State Safety Commission, which is well-equipped to ensure that such events do not turn tragic.

“The agency has a partnership with security agencies to ensure crowd control at locations with large numbers of people.

“Individuals and groups can register their events and get clearance through the Safety Commission’s platform.”

Lagos State noted that any group who flouts these measures will surely face the legal consequences of its indiscretion.

“The Government has activated all its safety mechanisms, following a directive from Mr Governor who has also summoned a meeting of all safety agencies.

“Besides, Mr Governor has directed that the ongoing advocacy against fire and flooding, among others, should be strengthened,” he added.

At least 65 persons have lost their lives in stampede while struggling for food packages in Ibadan, Anambra, and Abuja. With many others injured, the activities of charity organisers are becoming a deathly affair as citizens struggle in a survival of the fittest to have access to food packages been handed out.
