The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is currently deliberating on a petition seeking the recall of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central in the National Assembly.
INEC’s Acting Director of Publicity, Esther Chibuikem, confirmed the ongoing meeting, which is taking place at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja. The discussion follows the official submission of the recall petition by INEC’s Secretary, Rose Oriaran-Anthony, on Monday.
This development comes on the heels of a ruling by the Federal High Court in Lokoja, Kogi State, which overturned an earlier order that had temporarily halted the recall process. The court ruled on Friday that the recall effort is constitutionally valid and aligns with the civic rights of Kogi Central constituents.
Previously, the court had issued an interim injunction restraining INEC from accepting or acting on any petition containing signatures from the district. However, with the injunction now lifted, INEC is free to proceed with reviewing the petition in line with legal provisions.
The outcome of INEC’s meeting could have significant political implications for Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, as it determines the next steps in the recall process. Meanwhile, the court has urged constituents to continue exercising their rights in a peaceful and orderly manner.
Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.
