The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, on Monday raised concerns that some officers accused of guarding a property where foreign hackers were arrested had been on unauthorized duty. He also confirmed that the officers had been apprehended and would be held accountable, as their actions had tarnished the reputation of the force and attempted to undermine its integrity.
Egbetokun spoke in Abuja while fielding questions from journalists during a high-level meeting he held with all heads of investigative units.
The police chief stated that the arrested officers are currently in detention as investigations continue to determine why they were on unauthorized duty.
“And the fact that some policemen were also seen protecting these foreigners. Yes, it is true. And the policemen have been arrested. We found out that the policemen were on illegal duty. Nobody deployed them. They were not properly deployed for that assignment,” Egbetokun said.
