The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a warning about an extended heatwave that is expected to affect various regions across the country in the coming days.
In its weather outlook released on Wednesday, NiMet reported that maximum temperatures across Nigeria have largely been in the range of 38°C to 40°C, with a possibility of slight increases in some areas.
As of Wednesday, February 19, the agency recorded temperatures of 38°C in cities such as Port Harcourt, Owerri, Enugu, Awka, Bida, Minna, Gusau, Iseyin, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Temperatures reached 39°C in Sokoto, Kebbi, Lokoja, Makurdi, Abakaliki, Ikom, Jalingo, and Yola. The highest recorded temperature of 40°C was observed in Yelwa.
In light of the heatwave, NiMet has urged Nigerians to take necessary precautions. The agency recommends staying hydrated, seeking cooler or air-conditioned spaces, wearing light clothing, and ensuring good ventilation, especially for infants.
The agency also warned that early mornings, daytime, and nighttime temperatures will feel warmer than usual, adding to discomfort. Additionally, moisture influx and rising temperatures are expected to heighten discomfort levels nationwide.
The states most affected by the heatwave include Ogun, Lagos, Ondo, Edo, Delta, Kogi, Oyo, Kwara, Niger, FCT, and Bayelsa. Other areas at risk include Anambra, Imo, Ebonyi, Enugu, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Benue, Nasarawa, Taraba, Adamawa, Kebbi, Osun, Zamfara, Sokoto, and Benue.
Residents are advised to take the necessary steps to protect themselves from the extreme heat over the coming days.
