FORMER INEC CHAIRMAN, PROF. HUMPHREY NWOSU DIES AT 83

Professor Humphrey Nwosu, who served as the head of Nigeria’s National Electoral Commission (NEC) from 1989 to 1993, has passed away at the age of 83. He reportedly died in the United States.

Nwosu is most remembered for overseeing the historic June 12, 1993 presidential election, which is widely regarded as one of the most transparent and fairest elections in Nigeria’s history. That election saw Chief Moshood Kashmawo Olawole Abiola of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) emerge as the presumed winner.

Appointed by General Ibrahim Babangida, Prof. Nwosu brought about significant electoral innovations, including the introduction of the Option A4 voting system and the Open Ballot system, both of which aimed to improve transparency and reduce electoral fraud.

His contributions have left an indelible mark on Nigeria’s democratic evolution, making him a central figure in the country’s electoral history.
