Javier Bolivar, a Colombian footballer, has sparked outrage following an incident during a midweek match between Real Alianza Cataquera and Deportivo Quique, where he slapped referee Vanessa Ceballos after being shown a red card.
The incident took place in the 66th minute, as Bolivar was already off the pitch when Ceballos raised the red card. As the referee prepared to show him the card, Bolivar confronted her and, in a moment of aggression, slapped her across the face with his right hand. Ceballos immediately reacted, attempting to kick him in retaliation, before being restrained by other players on the field.
The shocking footage of the altercation quickly spread across social media, sparking widespread condemnation. Fans, players, and officials alike expressed their disgust at Bolivar’s actions, demanding stern disciplinary action. The disturbing incident has reignited the ongoing debate about violence and respect in sports, particularly towards women in positions of authority.
Bolivar took to Instagram to apologise for his actions, calling the incident “disrespectful and inappropriate.” In his lengthy statement, he denied intentionally striking Ceballos, explaining that he had been attempting to grab the whistle from her mouth and that the slap was unintentional. He expressed regret, saying, “I want to make it absolutely clear that at no time was there any physical aggression toward the referee. However, I understand that my gesture was offensive and portrayed her as contrary to the values of football and respect.”
He continued, “I firmly reject any form of violence, especially against women. Women deserve all our respect, care, and admiration. My commitment is to work on my personal and athletic growth so as to never again repeat an act that violates anyone’s dignity.”
