Fire Destroys Around 50 Shops at Bayan Tasha Market in Yobe

An early morning fire has destroyed about 50 shops at the popular Bayan Tasha market in Damaturu, the capital of Yobe State.

According to an eyewitness, the fire began around 2:00 am on Tuesday, shortly after electricity was restored in the area, when most shop owners had already closed for the night.

Thankfully, the quick intervention of both federal and state fire services prevented further damage. Although no lives were lost, the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) is on the ground assessing the extent of the damage and cataloging the affected properties.

This fire comes exactly one year after a similar blaze ravaged shops at Bayan Tasha market in 2023. The incident adds to a growing list of fire outbreaks at markets across the country.
