FilmOne Lands Global Rights to Funke Akindele’s New Blockbuster “Behind the Scenes”

FilmOne Entertainment has sealed an exclusive global distribution deal for Nollywood powerhouse Funke Akindele’s latest movie, Behind the Scenes, in what insiders describe as one of the most significant partnerships in Nigeria’s film industry this year.

The agreement follows the filmmaker’s remarkable box-office run, with her previous films grossing a combined ₦3.3 billion  a record that firmly places her among the most commercially successful filmmakers in Africa.

Confirming the deal, FilmOne Entertainment said the collaboration reflects its continued commitment to promoting world-class African cinema and supporting storytellers whose works connect with diverse audiences.

“Funke Akindele has proven time and again that authentic Nigerian stories can compete globally,” a FilmOne executive told Observer Times. “With Behind the Scenes, we are proud to back another visionary project that combines humour, heart, and humanity  hallmarks of her storytelling.”

Scheduled for nationwide release on December 12, Behind the Scenes has already generated massive buzz following its unveiling at the 2025 FilmOne Entertainment Exhibitors’ Showcase, where industry stakeholders described it as “a potential holiday blockbuster.”

At the showcase, FilmOne turned heads with a cinematic presentation that highlighted its growing dominance in Nollywood distribution and its expanding partnerships with global studios such as Disney, Sony, and Warner Bros.

According to the company, its 2025 Nollywood lineup will feature a mix of genres — from high-stakes drama and romance to comedy and action  including anticipated titles such as The Herd, 3 Cold Dishes, Colours of Fire, Oversabi Aunty, and Warlord.

FilmOne said these releases reaffirm its mission to “scale Nigerian storytelling for global audiences” while sustaining its legacy as West Africa’s leading content powerhouse.

Funke Akindele, who recently disclosed that the inspiration behind Behind the Scenes came “from everyday human experiences and the strength of ordinary Nigerians,” expressed excitement about the collaboration.

“I’m thrilled to once again partner with FilmOne,” she said. “This story is deeply personal  it’s about resilience, laughter, and finding hope when life gets complicated. I can’t wait for audiences to see it.”

In addition to Akindele’s new project, FilmOne also announced a renewed partnership with actress and producer Toyin Abraham, whose previous title Iyalode grossed over ₦300 million. The studio will distribute her upcoming December slate, solidifying its reputation as the go-to distributor for Nigeria’s biggest female-led hits.

Industry watchers say FilmOne’s dual collaboration with Funke Akindele and Toyin Abraham “cements its grip on Nigeria’s festive box office” and sets the tone for a record-breaking December in Nollywood.

“FilmOne is not just distributing films; it’s curating culture,” noted a Lagos-based film analyst. “By backing strong female voices and championing local content, they are redefining what African cinema means to the world.”
