In a significant move to bolster national security, the Federal Government has directed the deployment of retired military officers to secure the nation’s ungoverned spaces.
The initiative, announced on Tuesday, aims to strengthen security and revive economic activities in conflict-affected regions.The directive followed the inauguration of an 18-member committee by the Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Musa (retd.), at the Ministry of Defence headquarters in Abuja.
Represented by the Permanent Secretary, Richard Pheelangwa, the Minister tasked the veterans with reclaiming ungoverned territories to restore economic viability. He emphasized that their deployment would complement ongoing military operations by integrating experienced personnel into local security and development efforts, especially in areas with limited state presence.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by the Ministry’s Deputy Director of Information, Enderline Chukwu, Gen. Musa outlined the committee’s mandate to also reposition the Nigerian Legion Corps of Commissionaires and Veterans.
The Minister described the strategy as a shift from purely military campaigns toward a more inclusive, sustainable approach one that addresses underlying socio-economic drivers of insecurity.He further highlighted the government’s commitment to empowering veterans post-retirement, ensuring they continue to contribute to national stability while leading productive lives.
This deployment forms part of broader efforts to enhance security architecture and foster resilience in regions weakened by conflict.
