Douye Diri Quits PDP Alongside Bayelsa Assembly Members

Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has formally resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), ending months of speculation over his political future.

The announcement was made public via a Facebook post by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Daniel Alabrah, who confirmed that the governor’s resignation was accompanied by that of the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Abraham Ingobere, and all PDP members in the state legislature.

Although Diri’s next political destination remains unconfirmed, his exit from the PDP has fuelled widespread belief that he may be heading to the All Progressives Congress (APC), a move long rumoured in Bayelsa’s political circles.

According to reports gathered by The Punch, the governor made the announcement during the weekly State Executive Council meeting held on Wednesday at Government House, Yenagoa. It was also confirmed that he has submitted his resignation letter to the PDP.

The mass resignation is believed to include all members of the State Executive Council, signalling a major political shift in Bayelsa’s governance structure.

When contacted for further comment, Alabrah declined to speak, saying, “I cannot talk now.” Efforts to reach the state PDP Chairman, Mr. Solomon Agwanana, were unsuccessful as he did not respond to calls.

Diri’s departure reduces the PDP’s tally of governors to eight, following recent defections in Enugu and other states. The development is expected to reshape the political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.
