The family of one Asher Christopher, 23 has requested for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death inside the Nigerian National Petroleum Company office building in Port Harcourt.
According to reports by The Punch, the father of the deceased, Dan Christopher complained that he is yet to see or receive the corpse of his son who was a cleaner and casual worker until the 20th of August in the office located along Moscow Road, Port Harcourt.
Mr Christopher narrated how his younger son was invited to the police station in Port Harcourt. On reaching there, both father and son were made to wait and asked to return on Wednesday.
He further explained how he was later informed that his son had passed, and his family were taken to NNPC office building at Moscow Road, where the staff confirmed he had died. They however didn’t give clear information as to how he died, the incident surrounding his death and his corpse had been moved from the factory with the place already sanitized.
He requested to see the corpse of his son but was refused permission. The family has however reported the case to the old GRA police station. He said:
“I want justice. I want to see my son’s corpse. How can somebody die and over 24 hours the parents have not seen him? How can they take my son to the mortuary without consulting his family?
According to The Punch who contacted the spokesperson for the state police command, Grace Iringe-Koko, she confirmed the incident, saying the investigation into the matter had commenced.
She stated, “Yes, we are aware of the incident. The family reported the matter at the Old GRA Police Station. The corpse of the boy has been deposited at the mortuary, and investigation is ongoing to ascertain the circumstances surrounding his death.”
The media and other human rights organisation are watching the security operatives to see how the investigation and justice will be carried out on this case.
