President Bola Tinubu has submitted three ambassadorial nominees to the Senate for confirmation, marking the first set of diplomatic appointments to move forward since he assumed office in 2023.
The list was read on Wednesday by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during plenary, which was streamed on the official National Assembly YouTube channel. Akpabio announced, “The list contains three names for now. I am sure others will follow,” after presenting the President’s letter to lawmakers.
Those nominated include Kayode Are from Ogun State, Aminu Dalhatu from Jigawa State and Ayodele Oke. The three names represent the first wave of prospective envoys expected to fill Nigeria’s vacant diplomatic posts, which have remained unoccupied since the administration dissolved previous appointments shortly after assuming office.
Tinubu’s delay in naming ambassadors has attracted public scrutiny over the past year, especially as several Nigerian foreign missions have been left without substantive heads. The forwarding of the new names signals the beginning of a long-awaited process to reorganise the country’s diplomatic representation abroad.
Lawmakers are expected to begin the screening process once the nominees are scheduled to appear before relevant Senate committees.
