Due to delays in their accrued pension rights, federal government retirees have protested and blocked entry to the Federal Ministry of Finance in Abuja.
Comrade Sylva Nwaiwu, National Chairman of the National Union of Contributory Pensioners, is leading the demonstration, which calls for the prompt payment of their benefits.
Pension benefits obtained under the previous plan before the Contributory Pension Scheme was established in 2004 are represented by accrued rights.
The Pension Act stated that these benefits would be given to Pension Fund Administrators (PFAs) so that retirees could obtain them once they retired.
According to Comrade Nwaiwu, many pensioners who retired as early as 2003 are still waiting on the federal government to pay their payments to their PFAs, which keeps them from using the PASS to access monies.
