With the race for the position of the next Vice chancellor of the University of Abuja currently in progress, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Uniabuja chapter, has called for greater transparency in the selection process while maintaining a neutral position.
ASUU has urged the governing council to ensure a fair process with integrity and openness to uphold the university’s reputation as numerous applicants express interest in heading the institution.
It was reported by Leadership Newspaper that the Chairman of ASUU, Dr. Syvanus Ugoh expressed confidence in the chairman of the governing council.
While he urged the aspirants to abide by the laws and acts of the University, he clarified that the union bears a neutral position in the race.
The University has been in the news recently over the issue of the next VC of the institution. The governing council responsible for overseeing the selection of the new Vice Chancellor, has been under increasing pressure to act decisively and ensure that the process remains free from undue influence.
While the council has stated that the selection process is proceeding according to established protocols, there are growing concerns about its ability to maintain independence in the face of mounting allegations.
ASUU who has been at the forefront of torch lighting the whole process is pushing for an inclusive and transparent approach. They argued that the university must avoid repeating past mistakes, where political influence and favoritism often marred key appointments.
