Aro psychiatric patients bite doctor, nurses during protest over ‘poor treatment’

Chaos erupted on Wednesday at the Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Aro, in Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun State, as patients protested against what they described as ‘poor treatment’ by the facility’s management.

It was gathered that a psychiatric doctor, whose identity is yet-to-be ascertained, and three nurses escaped being killed by the protesting patients.

Alarmingly, the violent protest took the health facility staff by surprise and lasted for over two hours.

Police operatives from the Lafenwa Divisional Headquarters later intervened and brought the situation under control.

Reason for the Protest

It was gathered that the patients were protesting against poor feeding, inadequate sanitation, and the lack of alternative electricity supply whenever the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) cuts power.

Some relatives of the patients, speaking with newsmen, said these issues had persisted for a while, prompting some patients to resort to protest due to the lack of solutions.

Cost of Treatment

A female relative of one of the patients, who requested anonymity, stated that each patient pays between N500,000 and N700,000.
