APC yet to decide on zoning for Kwara governorship seat, says party chairman

The All Progressives Congress in Kwara State has disclosed that no decision has been taken on zoning its governorship ticket for the 2027 general elections.

The state Chairman of the party, Sunday Fagbemi, made this known whilst speaking on a radio programme monitored late on Friday, amidst growing calls for power shift to Kwara North Senatorial District.

Fagbemi explained that the party had not commenced discussions on zoning, stressing that such decisions rest with the national leadership of the APC.

“If there will be any zoning, the national executive of the party will give the directive. But as of now, nothing of such is on the offing. We have not even discussed it because we don’t have the schedule decided yet. Anyone who has interest to vie for any position has the right to do so,” he said.

The party chairman further noted that even if the Kwara chapter adopts a position on zoning, it would require approval from the party’s national secretariat.

“Even if we decide in Kwara that this is what we want, it is still subject to approval from the national secretariat,” Fagbemi emphasised.

His statement comes against the backdrop of mounting pressure from stakeholders in Kwara North, who have been pushing for the APC to zone its governorship ticket to the senatorial district. The zone has not produced a governor since Nigeria returned to democratic rule in 1999.

The zoning controversy has become a major talking point amongst political circles in the state as the APC gears up for the next electoral contest.

Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, who assumed office in 2019, will be completing his second and final term in 2027. Constitutional provisions bar him from seeking a third term.

Political observers expect heightened activities and succession debates as the state prepares to elect a new governor alongside federal and state legislators in the 2027 polls.
