A faction within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akwa Ibom State, known as the Progressive Advocates, has called on Governor Umo Eno to restructure his administration. The group warns that the continued presence of appointees loyal to former Governor Udom Emmanuel could jeopardize the governor’s political future and governance effectiveness.
In an open letter released in Uyo, the Progressive Advocates claim that numerous key officials, including commissioners, aides, council chairmen, and lawmakers, continue to support Emmanuel, thereby undermining the current administration. They stress that these individuals remain a threat to the success of Governor Eno’s administration, alleging that their loyalties lie elsewhere, which could destabilize the government.
The letter, signed by the group’s Chancellor Anthony Peter, Secretary Pastor Okon John, and Publicity Secretary Felix Ita, further cautioned that no administration can prosper when surrounded by individuals with divided allegiances. The group added, “No leader goes to war with borrowed soldiers. A team whose allegiance lies elsewhere cannot fight your battles, defend your record, or protect your political future.”
The Progressive Advocates assert that approximately 97% of Governor Eno’s appointees were handpicked by Emmanuel. These appointees, according to the group, have allegedly resisted government policies, leaked sensitive information, and even undermined government initiatives. They also claim that some appointees are collaborating with the former governor to destabilize the APC in the state.
“These individuals are spreading false narratives about the administration, suggesting that it has no tangible achievements, despite significant state revenues. Their aim is to create a false perception of failure,” the group stated.
The Progressive Advocates urge Governor Eno to swiftly overhaul his cabinet, warning that failure to address this issue could cripple his administration and hinder his chances of re-election. “Leadership demands courage and clarity. The people of Akwa Ibom deserve a governor who commands unwavering loyalty, not one held hostage by saboteurs,” they added.
Despite these challenges, the group reaffirmed their confidence in Eno’s leadership abilities. They expressed optimism that prompt action would restore internal unity, strengthen the administration, and ensure the long-term success of his Arise Agenda.
Emmanuel’s Political Influence Under Scrutiny Umo Eno’s relationship with his predecessor, Emmanuel, who played a crucial role in his election, has reportedly become strained. In recent months, Eno’s defection to the APC and Emmanuel’s continued influence have added layers of complexity to the political dynamics in Akwa Ibom.
Steve Abia, Emmanuel’s Special Assistant, confirmed that police officers assigned to the former governor had been withdrawn. However, he could not clarify who issued the directive. In response, Akwa Ibom’s Commissioner for Information, Aniekan Umanah, denied any involvement by Governor Eno in the withdrawal of security personnel, asserting that such decisions are the sole responsibility of the police authorities.
Umanah also dismissed claims of a security breach as “baseless propaganda,” emphasizing that all former governors of the state continue to enjoy their security details as stipulated by law. He further assured that Governor Eno remains committed to promoting peace, unity, and good governance in Akwa Ibom.
