Former Super Eagles goalkeeper and ex-Kayserispor star, Alloy Agu, has urged the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to strengthen competition in the national team’s goalkeeping department, saying Stanley Nwabali needs “strong rivalry like Vincent Enyeama once had” to reach his full potential.
Agu, who spoke in an exclusive interview, said the Chippa United goalkeeper has shown remarkable improvement since becoming Nigeria’s first choice but stressed that “healthy competition remains the fuel that drives excellence at the top level.”
“Stanley has done well and he’s kept the hope of Nigerians alive,” Agu said. “But like every player, there are always areas that need improvement both technically and psychologically. Constructive criticism is part of growth, not to condemn but to make him and the team better.”
The former RFC Liège player, who represented Kayserispor between 1994 and 1997, added that it was not in his character to publicly criticise his players. “I don’t believe in exposing or talking down on my goalkeeper. My role is to encourage him to improve and give his best for Nigeria. We are at a crucial stage, aiming for World Cup qualification, and all things are possible if we keep working together,” he explained.
Agu, who also served as Nigeria’s goalkeeping coach between 2021 and 2023, reflected on the era of Vincent Enyeama, Dele Ayenugba, and Austin Ejide — a time he described as “Nigeria’s golden period for goalkeeping.”
“I think Vincent had that healthy rivalry with Dele Ayenugba and Austin Ejide — and it brought out the best in all of them,” Agu said. “We need such competition around Nwabali now. It’s what keeps a player sharp and motivated.”
He mentioned that other goalkeepers such as John Noble, currently plying his trade in Tanzania, are showing strong form and could challenge for a national team spot. “The moment we have capable hands around Nwabali, it becomes easier for the team to progress collectively,” he added.
Agu’s comments come amid recent debates over Nwabali’s form during Nigeria’s World Cup qualifying games against Lesotho and Benin Republic, where sections of fans questioned his communication and decision-making.
Despite the criticism, Agu maintained optimism about the Super Eagles’ chances, insisting that Nwabali can grow into one of Africa’s finest goalkeepers with proper guidance and competition.
“The goal is not to criticise but to inspire improvement. Once we build the right environment with support, competition, and confidence Nigeria’s goalkeeping department will return to its best,” he concluded.
