The House of Representatives Committee on Constitution Review will convene today, 6th October 2025, with leadership from registered political parties to advance the ongoing effort to amend Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution.
The committee, headed by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, has identified critical issues for potential amendment. These include the establishment of state police, local government autonomy, women’s special seats, power devolution, and electoral reforms.
In recent weeks, the committee conducted consultations across the six geopolitical zones, gathering input from various stakeholders. It is expected to submit its final draft for National Assembly adoption by December 2025.
A statement from House spokesperson Akin Rotimi outlined that the session will cover priority areas such as special seats for women, judicial and electoral reforms, independent candidacy, state police, and human rights. Political parties will have the chance to share their perspectives and contribute meaningfully to the discussions.
“Political parties are at the heart of our democracy,” Kalu noted. “Their active involvement in these consultations is crucial to crafting constitutional amendments that reflect the aspirations of all Nigerians.”
The committee has also prepared a compendium summarizing the bills under consideration to guide today’s engagement.
