Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi is targeting European football for Fulham after a thrilling 1-1 draw with Brighton on the opening day of the Premier League season. The dramatic late equalizer from Rodrigo Muniz in stoppage time helped Fulham secure a point after an intense match.
Iwobi, who has been a consistent presence for the Cottagers, played a pivotal role in the match, providing creativity from midfield. His efforts included three key passes and completing 18 of 24 passes in total before being substituted after 66 minutes for Adama Traoré.
Following last season’s best-ever Premier League points tally, the Nigerian international is focused on continuing Fulham’s upward trajectory. Iwobi has set his sights on securing a place in the Europa Conference League for the upcoming season.
“We’re all aiming to play in Europe,” Iwobi shared. “Having played in European competitions before, I want to do it again. Last season was a great achievement for us, but now the target is to finish in the top 10 and qualify for Europe.”
The match against Brighton saw Fulham start the season with a strong spirit, despite a difficult second half. Brighton’s Matt O’Riley’s penalty looked set to give them the win, but Muniz’s dramatic late strike ensured the team left with a point.
Fellow Nigerian international, Calvin Bassey, also featured in the match, but faced a tough challenge at left-back, being booked early and struggling with Brighton’s wingers. However, the late equalizer offered Fulham a valuable point to build on.
Iwobi praised the impact of manager Marco Silva on the squad, noting his influence in nurturing the players’ ambition. According to Iwobi, Silva’s passion for the team, combined with his willingness to engage with players off the pitch, creates an environment that fosters improvement.
“He’s someone who shows his emotions and fights for the team. But if you need to talk to him off the pitch, his door is always open. He’s committed to making players better,” Iwobi said.
