KEBBI GOVT, POLICE, SYMPATHISES WITH VICTIMS AS LAKURAWA GROUP UNLEASHES MAYHEM IN VILLAGES

The Kebbi State Government has expressed sympathy with the families affected by the recent attack by the Lakurawa group on villages in Arewa Local Government Area.

The terrorist group had attacked Birnin Dede village, killing 13 persons and burning 8 other surrounding villages in Arewa LGA in what appeared to be a reprisal following the killing of their leader, Maigemu, by a combined security force in Kebbi.

The Chief Press Secretary to Governor Nasir Idris, Mr Ahmed Idris on Monday confirmed the attack, saying that the government is deeply disturbed by the brutal attack on innocent lives.

He assured that the state government remains committed to bringing the perpetrators to justice.

Similarly, the Kebbi State Police Command has confirmed the attack, describing it as unfortunate.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Nafiu Abubakar, stated that the Commissioner of Police has visited the affected communities and deployed a tactical squad to decisively confront the Lakurawa bandits.

“On receipt of the report, the Commissioner of Police, Kebbi State Command, CP Bello M Sani swiftly mobilized to the scene for an on-the-spot assessment visit, where he interacted with the Police, Army, Civil Defense, and vigilante personnel already deployed to combat crimes in the area,” the spokesman said in a statement.

According to the statement, the CP visited the site of the attack to perform an on the spot assessment, to ascertain the situation, while condoling with the victims of the attack.

The statement reads:
“On 09/03/2025 at about 2047hrs, the suspected Lakurawa bandits in their large numbers with sophisticated weapons have invaded Dogon Daji, Danmarke, Yar Goru, Tambo, Birnin Debi, Garin Nagoro and Garin Rugga villages, all in Arewa LGA, communities between Nigeria and Niger Republic. As a result, eleven (11) people lost their lives and two (2) others sustained gun shot wounds. The suspected bandits also set ablaze some houses at the affected villages.

“On receipt of the report, the Commissioner of Police, Kebbi State Command, CP Bello M Sani swiftly mobilized to scene for an on the spot assessment visit, where he interacted with the Police, Army, Civil Defense and vigilante personnel already deployed to combat crimes in the area.

“The CP equally condemned the unfortunate incident and instantly reviewed the security architecture of the area, by deploying additional tactical teams and charged them to decisively deal with suspected Lakurawa bandits operating in the area.

“CP Bello M Sani also had a meeting with critical stakeholders in the area, where he consoled them and appealed to them to always assist the Police and other security agencies with relevant and timely information for prompt response.”
