A popular fitness centre, Eco Fitness Hub in Gwarimpa, Abuja was reportedly engulfed in flames.
The spokesperson of the FCT Emergency Management Department, Nkechi Isa, disclosed in a statement on Wednesday that the fire has been contained by emergency officials.
She commented that the fire started in the lounge of the fitness centre and quickly spread in the building.
It was brought under control by a combined effort of the Red Cross, FCT Fire Services, Federal Fire Services, FCT Emergency Management Department (FEMD), and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).
Luckily, no lives were lost, but most of the equipment at the gym was destroyed in the fire.
The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained.
The Ag Director General of FEMD, Engr Abdulrahman Mohammed, has appealed to FCT residents to be cautious as the dry season sets in. This is especially as this is not the first fire outbreak in the state capital.
He advised residents to be cautious when using electronic appliances, and use the 112 emergency toll free number in case of emergency.
Safety is paramount in all recreational centers to prevent loss of lives due to hazards. It is time the government enforces safety measures in facilities which would be beneficial to both management and clients.
